ÖBB

Central Passenger Information with AURIS, Displays and Public Address System

Funkwerk and the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) have enjoyed a successful partnership in the field of smart passenger information for many years. ÖBB transports over 300 million passengers annually on more than 10,000 track kilometers*. To meet the increasing demand for real-time information, we have jointly developed the central, highly automated AURIS system and installed over 3,500 displays.

Our Approach

Automated. Integrated. Future-proof.
Since the project start in 2008 on the pilot route Kufstein–Brenner, the system has been continuously growing. Today, ÖBB fully automates more than 900 of the approximately 1,100 stations via five operations centers.

System components overview

  • Connection to the train dispatching system ARAMIS
Automatic processing of scheduled/actual data, detection of deviations (e.g., track changes, delays, partial cancellations, rail replacement services)
  • Text-to-Speech with Cura®
Highly flexible voice output, supplemented by live announcements via LTE or GSM-R
  • Visual Information Systems
Barrier-free displays on more than 3,500 high-resolution LED and TFT displays, information kiosks with touch and read-aloud functions
  • Mobile Passenger Information
WiFi-based push information directly to smartphones

Innovation with foresight

A connection to the Railway Emergency Management System improves incident communication.

The journaling offers convenient tracking of actions taken and information provided to travelers.

Success record

  • Central control of over 900 railway stations
  • More than 2.6 million train journeys annually with current passenger information
  • Installation of more than 3,500 devices in the form of displays and information kiosks
  • High system flexibility and reduced maintenance costs
  • Scalable platform for tomorrow’s mobility
