S-Bahn Berlin

Automated passenger information in urban network operations

S-Bahn Berlin GmbH operates one of the largest S-Bahn systems in Germany – with 340 kilometers of track, 168 stations, and over a million passengers daily. To ensure reliable, up-to-date passenger information, we have developed a highly automated passenger information system (RIS) for the company.

The system continuously processes timetable data, implements data from the DB Lightgate system for displaying capacity in the wagons, predicts deviations, and controls displays and announcements in both regular and disrupted operations – dynamically, redundantly, and tailored to complex operational environments

Our Approach

Comprehensive. Automated. Flexible.
The RIS of S-Bahn Berlin is designed for large-scale network operations. 21 regional control areas, each with a main station as a control center, ensure precise information distribution across the entire line network.

System components overview

  • Centralized Data Processing with Redundancy
Two hot-standby servers ensure continuous operation and guarantee system availability
  • Automated Display and Announcement Control
Around 500 displays and e-Kiosks, loudspeaker announcements automatically or manually via local communication points
  • Forecast-Based Real-Time Information
Continuous processing of scheduled/actual data for dynamic display in case of deviations
  • Flexible operation through decentralized control
Main line stations with local intercoms for maximum operational independence

Reliable communication

The information system is tailored to the complex requirements of urban rail traffic – whether in regular operation or during short-term operational changes. Three-stage display modes, real-time forecasts, and manual intervention options ensure clarity on the platform at all times.

Success record

  • 340 km of track network with digital passenger information
  • 168 stations fully integrated into the RIS
  • Around 500 display and public address units in operation
  • Daily import and reconciliation of timetable data
  • Redundant server structure for high reliability
  • Central and local control units for flexible operations management
