Digital Passenger Information for the City of Essen

To modernize and expand passenger information in the public transport system of the city of Essen, we have implemented a customized system for Via Verkehrsgesellschaft mbH, now known as Ruhrbahn GmbH. The goal was to establish reliable, barrier-free real-time communication at high-traffic stops.

Our Approach

Precise. Barrier-Free. Future-Proof.
Modern LED display systems with text-to-speech functionality were installed at 19 above-ground stops and in the subway/tram area. Current standards regarding readability, acoustics, and data integration were implemented. The connection to the central control system ensures automated and up-to-date passenger information.

System components overview

  • 54 LED departure displays – above ground
    double-sided, 160 × 48 pixels, 4.2 × 5.6 mm grid, integrated H-sign (backlit), text-to-speech module for barrier-free announcements
  • 8 LED ceiling displays – subway/tram area
    single-sided, 192 × 48 pixels, 7.62 mm grid
  • Data connection
    via IVU control computer (LDP1 protocol)
  • Technical implementation
    Installation, commissioning, cabling and network integration, civil engineering work provided by the client
