Bane NOR

Nationwide Real-Time Information System with KARI

Together with Bane NOR, Norway’s state-owned railway infrastructure company, we have developed the nationwide passenger information system KARI. The goal was to increase passenger satisfaction through current, reliable information while consistently automating manual processes. As part of the project, we also seamlessly integrated existing display and public address systems from third-party providers to ensure a continuous information chain and efficiently continue to use existing infrastructure.

Today, the system controls over 300 railway stations with more than 1,300 digital displays and around 300 announcement devices – centrally, in real-time, and with high availability.

Our Approach

Modular. Real-Time Capable. Highly Available.
KARI is based on a scalable system architecture and modularly structured software. The entire information processing, from train tracking to information output and integration into external services, is fully automated.

System components overview

  • Automated Data Processing
Processing of scheduled and actual timetable data including delays, platform changes, and operational interruptions
  • Real-Time Travel Information
Connection to interlocking systems, ERTMS / ETCS, GPS tracking, train composition, and occupancy data
  • Flexible Display Layouts
Web-based displays with variable presentation, bilingual information, service attributes, and stopping positions
  • Acoustic Announcements via TTS
Text-to-Speech output in Norwegian and English – automatically triggered by time or event triggers
  • Interfaces and Integration
Connection via the open SIRI standard for sharing real-time data with third-party providers and railway companies

Systematic Innovation

Thanks to its modular architecture, KARI can be flexibly expanded and continuously optimized. Additionally, statistical evaluations enable data-based timetable planning and system control.

Success record

  • Central control of over 300 railway stations
  • Over 1,300 displays and 300 announcement devices in daily operation
  • Fully automated information processing reduces manual interventions
  • Open, scalable platform with SIRI interface for external connections
  • Future-proof system design for growing requirements
