Functionality & integration of the DB Lightgate

The DB Lightgate system records train occupancy in real time directly at the station exit. Optical sensors on the track measure every passing carriage. An LED light barrier shines through the carriages: depending on occupancy, more or less light reaches the sensor, allowing the carriage occupancy to be precisely determined.

Data is transmitted wirelessly and in real time to the Lightgate server. There, the system calculates the utilisation rate for each individual carriage and transmits the results directly to the passenger information system.Die Datenübertragung erfolgt kabellos und in Echtzeit an den Lightgate Server. The passenger information system processes and interprets the raw data set. It links it to the corresponding train number, the next stop and the associated station track. A heuristic analysis automatically recognises the train set (e.g. 3-unit or 4-unit series).

This creates a precise, finalised data set that is displayed in real time on train destination displays – for maximum transparency and optimised passenger information.
